Since we formed Urban Krav Maga we have continually looked at ways of improving the system. An area of immediate concern was the groundwork.

The groundwork in Reality Based Self Defence Systems is often rudimentary and doesn’t offer enough to cover the multitude of scenarios that can occur on the ground, particularly if you’re up against a skilled attacker. We wanted to incorporate the best groundwork into our system but were concerned that many MMA/Brazilian Jiu Jutsu techniques can be problematic in real situations as spending too much time on the ground looking for a submission can get you killed on the street where the priority is to get up and away as quickly as possible. Leo Negao is just the man to fill this gap: former Brazilian Jiu Jutsu world champion, experienced street fighter from Rio, Vale Tudo competitor, Team Minotauro’s representative in London and a man who has trained extensively in Brazil with Anderson Silva.

Stewart McGill, Chief Instructor of Urban Krav Maga, and Leo Negao have worked and trained together for some time. Leo was not a great believer in the Krav Maga he had seen before but could immediately see the sense in Stewart’s approach, particularly the knifework. Given that their work together was informing how each taught their respective Jiu Jitsu and Krav Maga classes they decided to join forces to create Krav MMA and to introduce the system with a DVD covering their most important groundfighting and anti-kinfe tecnniques. With their friend and colleague, Ben Hockman, they have also produced a DVD covering Close Protection and general third party protection principles and techniques.
